Anne de Bretagne, Queen of Charles VIII and later of Louis XII, is depicted in this stunning 15th-century print from France, circa 1490. Surrounded by her Dames d'Honneur, or ladies-in-waiting, the queen is shown in a moment of quiet reflection as she is presented with a book. Anne de Bretagne (1477-1514) was a powerful and influential figure in the late Middle Ages. Born in Brittany, she was the heiress of the Duchy of Brittany and became a queen consort twice, first to Charles VIII of France in 1491 and later to Louis XII in 1499. Her marriage to Louis XII was childless, but she brought significant wealth and territorial gains to the French crown.
