This photograph captures the intense focus and unyielding determination of American professional boxer, Sonny Liston. Born Charles L. Liston on May 8, 1932, in Louisville, Kentucky, Liston rose to prominence in the world of boxing during the mid-1950s and early 1960s, becoming a formidable force in the heavyweight division. Liston's intimidating presence both in and out of the ring earned him the nickname "The Big Bear" and "The Bear," a moniker that reflected his powerful build and unrelenting fighting style. In this image, taken during his prime years in 1965, Liston is shown in the height of concentration, his eyes fixed on an unseen opponent, his fists clenched in a ready stance. At the time of this photograph, Liston had already made history by becoming the first heavyweight boxing champion to successfully defend his title six times.
