EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored copperplate engraving, taken from Friedrich Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar in 1798, showcases an enchanting collection of various species of crustaceans. The illustration features five distinct lobster species and one pitu shrimp. In the foreground, the Slipper Lobster (Scyllarides squammosus) is depicted with its elongated, flattened body and large, fan-like pincers. Next to it lies the Homard Lobster (Homarus gammarus), also known as the European lobster, with its distinctive, large, and powerful claws. Moving on, the Spiny Lobster (Palinurus elephas) is shown in the bottom right corner, easily recognizable by its long, spiny antennae and large, fan-like tail. The Pitu Shrimp (Macrobrachium carcinus), also known as the giant river prawn, is displayed in the upper left corner, with its long, slender body and large, fan-like pincers. The fourth lobster species in this illustration is the Scyllarid Lobster, which is not explicitly labeled but can be identified by its short, rounded body and small, paddle-like pincers. This species is commonly known as the Squat Lobster or the Porcelain Crab. This historical illustration offers a fascinating glimpse into the natural world of the late 18th century, showcasing the diverse range of crustaceans that were known at the time. The intricate handcoloring and meticulous copperplate engraving techniques used in this print add to its charm and make it a valuable piece of scientific and artistic history.
