This engraving, dated 1781, depicts St. Katharine's Hospital, a historic institution located in the parish of St. Botolph without Aldgate, near the Tower of London. The hospital was founded around 1148 by Matilda, the wife of King Stephen, as a place of refuge for a master, brethren, sisters, and thirteen poor persons. Over the centuries, the hospital grew in size and significance, eventually becoming the Royal Hospital and Collegiate Church of St. Katharine by the Tower. The early history of St. Katharine's Hospital is shrouded in legend, with some accounts attributing its founding to Queen Matilda's miraculous escape from a fire that destroyed the nearby Priory of St. Katharine in 1136. Regardless of its origins, the hospital quickly gained a reputation for its charitable work, providing shelter, food, and medical care to the poor and needy.
