EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts Stefan Schultze (1695-1775), a prominent German churchman hailing from Nurnberg, circa 1744. Schultze's distinguished career in the Lutheran Church spanned several decades, and his influence extended beyond the borders of his native city. Born in Nurnberg, Schultze studied theology at the University of Altdorf and was ordained as a pastor in 1722. He quickly rose through the ranks of the Lutheran Church, becoming a prominent figure in theological debates and ecclesiastical politics. In 1731, Schultze was appointed as the superintendent of the Lutheran churches in Nurnberg, a position he held until his retirement in 1771. Schultze was known for his strong commitment to the Lutheran faith and his efforts to promote religious unity within the church. He was a prolific writer and scholar, publishing numerous works on theology, church history, and liturgy. One of his most notable contributions was his defense of the traditional Lutheran liturgy against the reforms proposed by the Pietist movement. Despite his conservative theological stance, Schultze was also open to new ideas and engaged in dialogue with other religious traditions. He was a member of the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences and corresponded with scholars from around Europe. Schultze's ecumenical spirit and commitment to theological inquiry made him a respected figure in the intellectual community of his time. This print captures Schultze in the prime of his career, with a serious and contemplative expression that reflects his deep commitment to his faith and his role as a leader in the Lutheran Church. The intricately detailed costume and the elegant setting further underscore the importance of Schultze's position in Nurnberg's religious and intellectual life during the 18th century.
