Suffragette Hunger Strike Medal W. S. P. U

The W.S.P.U Hunger Strike medal presented to Maud Joachim. The first medals were given in August 1909. They comprised a silver pin bar with the words For Valour, a ribbon in the colours and either a silver or striped enamel bar, followed by a silver circle, with the words Hunger Strike on one side and the recipients name on the other. Miss. Joachims badge has a silver and an enamel bar which denotes she was not forcibly fed during her first hunger strike, but was on another occasion. The date on the bar is October 19th 1909. Maud Joachim (1869-1947) was arrested in October 1909 in Dundee for interrupting a meeting addressed by Winston Churchill. She was given ten days along with others including Adela Pankhurst and all began hunger strikes. The medal is contained in its original purple box with a green velvet lining. Inside, the white silk box lid has an inscription in gold Presented to (name) by the Womens Social and Political Union in recognition of a gallant action whereby through endurance to the last extremity of hunger and hardship, a great principle of political justice was vindicated. Date: 1909
