Suffren's most notable achievements came during the American Revolutionary War, where he served under the French navy. He played a crucial role in the defense of the French colonies in the Caribbean and the Indian Ocean against British forces. In 1778, he signed a treaty with the United States, making France an official ally in the war. One of Suffren's most famous victories was the Battle of Sainte-Lucie in 1778, where he successfully defended a French fort against a British fleet twice its size. He continued to serve France with distinction until his death in 1788. This print captures Suffren in his prime, dressed in the uniform of a French naval officer, with a determined expression and a sword at his side.
