EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning ivory-hued marble sculpture depicts Themis, the ancient Greek goddess of justice, dating back to the 4th century BC. Created by the renowned Greek sculptor Chairestratos of Rhamnous, this masterpiece was dedicated to Themis by Megakles and is currently housed in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens, Greece. The goddess is depicted as a mature, dignified woman, dressed in a long, flowing cloak and a himation, or mantle, draped artfully over her shoulders. Themis is often depicted with a blindfold covering her eyes, symbolizing impartiality and objectivity in her judgments. Her right hand is raised, holding a round object, believed to represent the eternal law or the constitutions of a city. The sculpture's intricate details and lifelike features are characteristic of the classical Greek art of the Hellenistic period. The smooth, polished surface of the Penteli marble adds to the sculpture's ethereal beauty and sense of timelessness. Themis was an essential figure in ancient Greek mythology and religion, and her image was widely used as a symbol of justice and fairness. This magnificent sculpture is a testament to the artistic and cultural achievements of ancient Greece and continues to inspire awe and admiration to this day.
