This evocative postcard image captures the spirit of camaraderie and respite that was offered to weary servicemen during the tumultuous years of World War One. The photograph depicts the exterior of Talbot House, better known as TOC H, a unique social club founded by the Reverend Tubby Clayton, an Anglican priest, in 1915. Located in Poperinghe, Belgium, near the Western Front, Talbot House provided a much-needed refuge for soldiers seeking respite from the horrors of war. The postcard, dated between 1919 and 1920, shows the quaint, red-brick building with its inviting front porch and lush garden, surrounded by trees and greenery. The serene atmosphere of the house is in stark contrast to the chaos and destruction of the battlefields that were only a short distance away.
