This exquisite pencil sketch captures the elegant form of the Longfin Pompano, Trachinotus goreensis, as depicted by the renowned naturalist George Forster during Captain James Cook's groundbreaking second voyage to explore the southern continent between 1772 and 1775. Forster, a German naturalist and son of the expedition's official scientist Johann Christian Friedrich Höhne, meticulously documented the diverse fauna and flora encountered during the voyage. This illustration, created in 1774 or 1775, showcases the Longfin Pompano's distinctive features, including its long, curved pectoral fins and forked tail, which are characteristic of the Carangidae family to which it belongs. The Longfin Pompano is a bony fish, classified under the Perciformes order and the Actinopterygii class.
