This exquisite handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, taken from Dumont de Sainte-Croix's Dictionary of Natural Science: Ornithology, published in Paris between 1816 and 1830, showcases two distinct avian species: the Tree Sparrow (Passer montanus) and the Village Weaver (Ploceus cucullatus). The illustration, created by the skilled hand of painter Jean Gabriel Pretre (1780-1845), was then meticulously engraved by Massard under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, and published by F.G. Levrault. Pretre, a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo, later became the artist to the Museum of Natural History in Paris. In this image, the Tree Sparrow is depicted perched on a tree branch, its brown and white plumage contrasting against the lush green foliage. The Village Weaver, a native of Africa, is shown building its intricately woven nest, which is suspended from a tree limb. The attention to detail in the illustration is remarkable, from the individual feathers on the birds to the textured bark of the tree trunk. The Tree Sparrow is a common bird species found throughout Europe, Asia, and parts of Africa.
