EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait of Leonid Kulik, taken around 1930, showcases the determined Russian scientist who is best known for his relentless pursuit of proving that the mysterious Tunguska event of 1908 was caused by a meteorite impact. Born on October 17, 1883, in the city of Odessa, Russia, Kulik dedicated most of his life to unraveling the enigma that had left the scientific community baffled for over two decades. The Tunguska event, which occurred on June 30, 1908, remains one of the most intriguing unsolved phenomena in the history of natural disasters. Witnessed by thousands of people across Siberia, the event was marked by an explosion that flattened an estimated 80 million trees over an area of approximately 2,150 square kilometers (830 square miles). Despite the widespread destruction, no meteorite was ever found at the site. Kulik, who had developed an interest in meteorites and meteoritics, embarked on a mission to locate the impact site and recover the elusive meteorite. He spent countless hours poring over maps, conducting surveys, and interviewing eyewitnesses. His unwavering belief in the meteorite theory fueled his determination, and he eventually led an expedition to the Tunguska region in 1927. Despite numerous setbacks and disappointments, Kulik continued his search until his untimely death on March 28, 1942. Although he was unable to find the meteorite, his groundbreaking work laid the foundation for future research on the Tunguska event and the search for other impact sites. This portrait, a testament to Kulik's unwavering dedication and passion, serves as a reminder of the enduring mystery that surrounds the Tunguska event and the ongoing quest to unravel the secrets of our universe.
