EDITORS COMMENTS
Amidst the turbulent waters of the Danube River, during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877, a remarkable feat of engineering was accomplished. In the strategic location between Tschaiten and Widdin, the Turkish army, in the course of their war efforts, constructed a temporary bridge of boats to enable them to cross the river and continue their advance. The image captures the intricate process of building this makeshift bridge, with logs carefully laid from one boat to another, creating a sturdy foundation for soldiers and supplies to traverse. The Danube, once an insurmountable barrier, was now a passageway, thanks to the ingenuity and determination of the Turkish soldiers. This bridge of boats served as a vital link in the transportation of troops and resources, allowing the Turks to press on in their war against Russia. The scene is a testament to the resilience and resourcefulness of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
