EDITORS COMMENTS
Uncle Lubin's Holiday" is a whimsical and fanciful illustration by the renowned British artist, William Heath Robinson. The scene depicts an overweight, plump uncle named Lubin, standing outside a tumbledown barber shop on the Strand in London, WC2. The shop, with its peeling paint and ivy-covered exterior, exudes an air of quirkiness and oddity. Uncle Lubin, dressed in a hat and coat, clutches a large umbrella and a suitcase, while he waits for his turn at the barber's chair. The barber shop, with its red and white striped pole and a sign that reads "Haircut 6d," is a common sight on the streets of London in the 1940s. The pavement outside the shop is filled with a curious mix of characters. A taxi driver, wearing a cap and a striped shirt, leans against a lamppost, smoking a pipe. A woman in a floral dress and a hat, carrying a large suitcase, looks curiously through the window of the shop. The scene is filled with a sense of anticipation and excitement, as Uncle Lubin prepares for his family holiday. The odd and strange details of the illustration, such as the car with its driver and luggage in the background, add to the sense of humour and whimsy. Heath Robinson's illustration is a delightful snapshot of everyday life in the 1940s, filled with oddities and curiosities that capture the imagination. The unfinished nature of the illustration only adds to its charm, making it a true work of art that continues to captivate and entertain viewers to this day. Credit: Courtesy of Mrs J. C.
