Unruly Oval cricket crowd

Impatient cricket spectators gather near the square at the Oval during an interruption in play in the match between Surrey and Yorkshire. The illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News described the crowd as unruly and reported an unsavoury incident..." When the umpires walked out...to inspect the pitch, during the Yorkshire and Surrey match, which was interrupted by rain, one of the more impatient members of the crowd kicked (Frank) Chester and struck at (Denis) Hendren. This cowardly on the two most innocent people involved in the matter is rendered more discreditable to the Oval crowd since Chester could not defend himself properly, having lost an arm in the war." Date: August 1931

EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage photograph, taken in August 1931, captures an unruly moment at the Oval cricket ground during a match between Surrey and Yorkshire. The image, published in the Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News, depicts a crowd of impatient spectators gathered near the square, growing restless as an interruption in play due to rain delayed the action. During this time, two innocent individuals, Frank Chester and Denis Hendren, were subjected to unsavoury treatment by one of the more agitated members of the crowd. The umpires had walked out to inspect the pitch, but the frustration of the crowd boiled over, leading to an act of cowardice and violence. Chester, a former soldier who had lost an arm in the war, was unable to defend himself properly during the assault. The incident is a discreditable moment in the history of the Oval cricket crowd, as the violence and impatience displayed by some spectators tarnished the spirit of the game. The Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News reported on this unfortunate incident, highlighting the unruly behaviour of the crowd and the unsportsmanlike conduct of the individual responsible. This photograph serves as a reminder of the passion and intensity that can sometimes accompany cricket matches, but also the importance of maintaining sportsmanship and respect for all involved.
