EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the USS McDougal (DD54), an American destroyer, in camouflage paint with her crew on deck, as she lies at anchor in a harbor during the First World War on July 19, 1918. The McDougal was one of the first American ships to take part in the conflict, and her appearance here in this image underscores the vital role the United States Navy played in the Great War. The USS McDougal was launched on February 15, 1918, and was commissioned into the U.S. Navy on March 27, 1918. With a top speed of over 35 knots and armed with four 4-inch/50 caliber guns, the McDougal was a formidable vessel that saw action in both the Atlantic and Mediterranean theaters. The application of camouflage paint to the ship's hull was a response to the increasing threat posed by German U-boats, which were sinking American merchant and military vessels at an alarming rate. The use of camouflage paint was intended to make the ship more difficult to detect from the air, and the McDougal's crew can be seen here applying the final touches to the paint job. The image also serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the brave men and women who served aboard these ships during a time of war. The crew members in this photograph stand at attention on the deck, their determined expressions reflecting the gravity of the situation and their commitment to the cause. This photograph is a valuable historical record of an important moment in American military history, and it offers a unique insight into the daily life of a U.S. Navy destroyer during the First World War.
