Victoria Attacked - A Daring Assault on the Queen, 1849

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the moment of crisis during an unprecedented attack on Queen Victoria as she traveled through the streets of London in 1849. In the print, a determined figure named John Francis Casimir FitzRoy, 12th Earl of Derby and Duke of Newcastle, better known as Lord Aberdeen, is depicted drawing his pistol and aiming it at the Queen's carriage, while she and her consort, Prince Albert, look on in shock. The incident unfolded on May 15, 1849, when a mentally disturbed man named John Francis acted on his delusional belief that the Queen was responsible for the potato famine in Ireland and sought to take her life. As the royal procession made its way through the city, Francis managed to approach the carriage and fired a shot, narrowly missing Victoria and Albert. Lord Aberdeen, who was riding in an escorting carriage, quickly drew his pistol and fired at the assailant, subduing him before he could inflict further harm. This dramatic scene, immortalized in this print, highlights the close call the Queen faced during this unexpected and harrowing event. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the risks and uncertainties that even the most powerful monarchs could face during their reigns. The print also underscores the importance of the royal escort and the quick thinking of those around the Queen in ensuring her safety during public appearances. This historical print, with its intricate details and vivid depiction of the event, offers a fascinating glimpse into the past and the extraordinary circumstances that shaped the life of Queen Victoria.
