This poignant image captures the youthful and ethereal beauty of Virginia Poe, the tragic wife of renowned American poet and writer, Edgar Allan Poe. Born on January 15, 1822, in Richmond, Virginia, Virginia Clemm Poe was the younger cousin and eventual wife of Edgar Allan Poe. They married in 1845, when Virginia was just 13 years old and Edgar was 27. The union was controversial due to the age difference and the fact that Virginia was still a child. Tragically, Virginia's life was cut short when she died of tuberculosis on January 30, 1847, at the age of 23. Her untimely death deeply affected Edgar Allan Poe, who was already struggling with mental health issues. The loss of his beloved wife is believed to have hastened Poe's descent into insanity. This photograph, taken around the time of their marriage, offers a glimpse into the enigmatic and melancholic world of the Poes.
