EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Campagnes Quarter in Thessaloniki, Greece during World War I, in the year 1917. Thessaloniki, also known as Salonika or Thessalonica, was a major Allied military hub and a melting pot of diverse cultures during the war. The Campagnes Quarter, located on the outskirts of the city, served as the military camp for the French Expeditionary Corps. The panoramic view showcases the vast expanse of the countryside, dotted with tents and military structures, stretching out towards the distant hills. Soldiers can be seen going about their daily routines, while horses and mules graze in the foreground. The tranquil scene is a stark contrast to the chaos and turmoil of the battlefield. Thessaloniki, situated in northern Greece, was a strategic location for the Allied forces as it provided access to the Aegean Sea and the Balkans. The city had been under Ottoman rule until 1912 when it was liberated by the Greeks, and the arrival of the Allied forces marked the beginning of a new chapter in its history. The photograph offers a glimpse into the past, providing a window into the daily life of the soldiers stationed in Thessaloniki during the war. It is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the soldiers and civilians during this tumultuous period in history.
