WW2 - Blitz, London - Progress report sent to Local Control

Senior Company Officer Jimmy Syrett, up with the branchmen, sends a progress report to Local Control. He is using one of the early walkie talkies with a throat, or larynx, microphone, supplied by the Royal Corps of Signals. These sets transmitted a good signal provided there was no local interference, i.e. the operator standing close to a corrugated iron fence. When this occured, the operator had to change position; sometimes merely pivoting on the same spot had the desired effect. Date: 1941

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, Senior Company Officer Jimmy Syrett of the London Fire Brigade stands by an open window, sending a progress report to Local Control during the intense Blitz of World War II. The year is 1941, and the city of London is under relentless bombardment. Syrett, wearing his fire helmet and holding a walkie-talkie, is in the midst of coordinating firefighting efforts with his team of brave branchmen. The walkie-talkie, a revolutionary piece of technology supplied by the Royal Corps of Signals, is an essential tool for effective communication during this chaotic time. With a throat or larynx microphone, Syrett speaks into the device, transmitting vital information to Local Control. The walkie-talkie's ability to provide a good signal, however, depends on the absence of local interference. If an operator stands too close to a corrugated iron fence, the signal can be disrupted, necessitating a change in position. The window frame in the background serves as a stark reminder of the destruction wreaked by the bombs. The hoses and equipment visible in the foreground underscore the urgency of the situation and the tireless efforts of the firefighters to save lives and protect property. This powerful image encapsulates the resilience and determination of the fire brigade during the Blitz, as they worked tirelessly to keep Londoners safe amid the chaos and destruction of war.
