Berlin Air Lift 1948 - June 1948. Staff at Allied Headquarters

Berlin Air Lift 1948 - June 1948.
Staff at Allied Headquarters, co-ordinating the crisis reponse - in the form of hundreds of planes flying food and supplies into West Berlin in order to circumvent the Russian blockade.
At a speech in Fulton Missouri in March 1946 Winston Churchill spoke of an " Iron Curtain" descending across Europe, splitting east from west. By April of 1948 his sombre prophecy appeared to have become reality. A monetary crisis in East Germany had led to a Russian blockade of traffic into West Berlin. Russia, angry at what they believed was a Western plot to take control of Germany decided to make the first move. West Berlin was isolated from the outside world. Goods and food were not allowed to enter the city, not even from Soviet controlled East Berlin. The Red Army took control of road and rail links and a major international crisis was developing. The three powers in official control of Berlin, America, France and the UK decided to airlift food and medical supplies into the isolated city. Around 2, 500 tons had to be dropped daily just to provide the minimum amount of food necessary. Planes took off from airbases in West Germany, mainly Hanover. The rate at which these aircraft were reloaded and prepard ready for their next sortie was incredible, only four minutes

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the intense atmosphere at Allied Headquarters during the Berlin Air Lift in June 1948. As a crisis response to the Russian blockade, hundreds of planes were flying food and supplies into West Berlin, circumventing the isolation imposed by the Soviets. The staff at Allied Headquarters can be seen coordinating these efforts with utmost urgency and determination. The events leading up to this critical moment trace back to Winston Churchill's famous speech in Fulton, Missouri, where he warned of an "Iron Curtain" dividing Europe. By April 1948, his prophecy seemed to have materialized as a monetary crisis in East Germany prompted Russia's blockade on traffic entering West Berlin. This move was believed to be retaliation against what they perceived as Western attempts to control Germany. With West Berlin cut off from essential goods and food supplies, a major international crisis loomed large. In response, the three powers officially controlling Berlin - America, France, and the UK - decided on an audacious plan: airlifting provisions into the isolated city. To meet minimum nutritional requirements alone required dropping around 2,500 tons daily. Planes took off from airbases primarily located in Hanover, West Germany. The efficiency with which these aircraft were reloaded and prepared for their next sortie was nothing short of remarkable; it often took just four minutes before they were ready for takeoff again. This historic photograph serves as a testament not only to the incredible logistical feat achieved during this operation but also highlights the dedication and resilience displayed by those working tirelessly behind-the-scenes at Allied Headquarters.
