Students Alison Webb and Kate Young raised 200 for the homeless charity Shelter with a half-term hitch-hike back in 1976.
The pals from Newcastle University travelled to Munich and back a distance of 2, 200 miles in just four days on their mercy mission for the charity. Their round trip took them through Holland, Belgium and Germany.
They managed it with just 32 lifts, mostly on lorries in Britain and private cars on the Continent.
We decided to try to cover as many miles as we could in four days to raise money for Shelter. We hoped to manage 1, 000 and eventually covered about 2, 200, said 19-year-old Kate.

Students Alison Webb and Kate Young - A Journey of Compassion

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this photo print, we are transported back to the year 1976, where two remarkable young women from Newcastle University, Alison Webb and Kate Young, embarked on a life-changing adventure. Their mission? To raise funds for the homeless charity Shelter through an audacious half-term hitch-hike. With unwavering determination and hearts filled with compassion, these spirited pals set off on a journey that would take them across borders and through countless miles. Over just four days, they covered an astonishing distance of 2,200 miles as they traveled from Newcastle to Munich and back again. Through Holland, Belgium, and Germany their path led them. Their success was not without its challenges; however, with only their thumbs raised high in hope along the roadside or at truck stops in Britain and private cars on the Continent. They managed to secure 32 lifts throughout their expedition. Kate fondly recalls their motivation behind this incredible feat: "We decided to try to cover as many miles as we could in four days to raise money for Shelter. We hoped to manage 1,000 and eventually covered about 2,200". This heartwarming image captures the essence of friendship forged through shared goals and selfless acts of kindness. It serves as a reminder that even in times when homelessness prevails over hopelessness – unity can prevail. As we reflect upon this snapshot from Memory Lane Prints dated February 26th, 1976 -
