About 3, 000 people are expected at tonights Christmas charity carol concert at Warwick castle. Roast chestnuts will be served and the singers will be joined by the Salvation Army Coventry Band and the St. Marys Church choir of Warwick. More than a hundred lanterns are being placed around the castle and there will be a dozen braziers in the courtyard. The gates open at 7 p.m. The event is jointly organised by the castle, Warwick Rotary and Lions Clubs and Friends of St. Marys Church. Tickets cost 20p, with children half-price. Proceeds will be split among several local charities. " The tickets have been selling well, but there are still some left and they will be on sale at the gates, " said Mr Alan Coppin, assistant manager at the castle. " We may have to shut the gates if it gets too crowded." Hot punch will also be served but its doubtful whether the same recipe will be used as the one they put about a century ago in the garrison pot shown in our photograph. The pot held 18 gallons of brandy, 18 gallons of rum and 100 gallons of water with sugar and lemons used to add flavour. Our photograph shows Mr. Michael Corp, general manager at Warwick Castle, and two members of staff, Sue Swainson (left) and Jane Reeve, around a giant punchbowl - the former castle garrison cooking urn - last used in 1872.
