Best-selling author Ken Follett, started out his career as a trainee reporter

Best-selling author Ken Follett, started out his career as a trainee reporter. Best selling author Ken Follett returned to his roots yesterday when he visited the Echo offices as he filmed a TV documentary. The Cardiff-born novelist, who has sold more than 130 million books worldwide, was a reporter at the Echo after leaving university more than 40 years ago. And yesterday he returned to the newsroom as he filmed a BBC Wales documentary charting what has inspired him as an author. The 63-year-old, who has topped bestseller charts all over the world, recounted meeting music royalty and dealing with angry readers as a young journalist in South Wales. After his family moved to London when he was 10, Mr Follett returned to the Welsh capital in September 1970 for a three-month graduate journalism course with Thomson Regional Newspapers. He joined the Echo in January 1971, cutting his teeth as a general news reporter. 27th, November, 1979

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we see the renowned best-selling author Ken Follett returning to his roots as he visits the Echo offices for a TV documentary. Having started his career as a trainee reporter at the very same place, it is a nostalgic moment for the Cardiff-born novelist who has achieved global success with over 130 million books sold worldwide. Now 63 years old, Follett reminisces about his early days in journalism during his time at the Echo after leaving university more than four decades ago. As he films a BBC Wales documentary exploring what has inspired him as an author, he takes us back to South Wales where he dealt with angry readers and had memorable encounters with music royalty. Although Mr. Follett's family relocated to London when he was young, his passion for storytelling brought him back to Cardiff in September 1970 for a graduate journalism course. Joining the Echo in January 1971 allowed him to sharpen his skills as a general news reporter and set him on the path towards becoming one of literature's most celebrated authors. This remarkable photograph captures not only Ken Follett's journey from aspiring journalist to literary icon but also serves as a testament to how our beginnings can shape our destinies. It reminds us that even those who reach great heights often start humbly, laying down foundations that lead them towards extraordinary achievements.
