EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant print captures a moment of pure joy and pride in the heart of Rick Wright, former owner and chairman of Cardiff City Football Club. Taken at Majestic Holiday Camp in Barry Island, it showcases one of the last smiles he ever wore upon learning that his beloved team was still leading the league. For Wright, this coastal retreat held a special place where he wholeheartedly accepted nothing less than Cardiff City's success. Sadly, this iconic figure in football history passed away at the age of 81 in Brisbane, Australia, just twelve days after suffering a stroke. His daughter, Martine Leben, revealed that her father had been fragile for several months following another stroke earlier that year. During his tenure as chairman from 1992 to 1995, Wright became an esteemed legend alongside manager Eddie May who tragically passed away earlier this year. Their combined efforts left an indelible mark on Cardiff City's legacy. As we reflect upon this photograph from the Western Mail Archive's Memory Lane Prints collection, we are reminded not only of Rick Wright's unwavering dedication to his club but also of the fleeting nature of life itself. This image encapsulates both triumph and fragility—a bittersweet reminder that even legends must eventually bid farewell to their passions.
