Ready for sea in land-locked Huddersfield... that was these pupils of Birkby Infants
Ready for sea in land-locked Huddersfield... that was these pupils of Birkby Infants school where there was a lifeboat yesterday. Teacher Mrs Jill Hinchliffe is seen with pupils. Mr Andrew Ingham, of the Honley and Brockholes branch of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, took the half-scale model to the school when he went to give a talk. The local RNLI branch has borrowed the model form the Great Yarmouth and Gorleston lifeboat crew to help promote the charity during its annual house-to-house collection week. The lifeboat and a Blue Peter inflatable dinghy is going to eight schools in the Huddersfield area this week. At least 100 children from Birkby Infants school are now looking forward to an educational trip to Filey, where they have been invited to look round a full sized lifeboat. 15th June 1988

EDITORS COMMENTS
Ready for sea in land-locked Huddersfield. . . that was these pupils of Birkby Infants school where there was a lifeboat yesterday. Teacher Mrs Jill Hinchliffe is seen with pupils". In this photo print, we are transported back to the 1980s and find ourselves in the heart of land-locked Huddersfield. Against all odds, the students of Birkby Infants School are brimming with excitement as they prepare to embark on an extraordinary nautical adventure. Thanks to Mr Andrew Ingham from the Honley and Brockholes branch of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), a half-scale model lifeboat has found its way into their classroom. This unique visit aims to promote charity during RNLI's annual house-to-house collection week, borrowing the model from Great Yarmouth and Gorleston lifeboat crew. The children eagerly gather around their teacher, Mrs Jill Hinchliffe, as they marvel at this unexpected glimpse into maritime rescue operations. Little do they know that this experience will ignite their curiosity further and pave the way for an unforgettable educational trip to Filey. There, they have been graciously invited to explore a full-sized lifeboat – an opportunity that promises both awe-inspiring moments and valuable lessons about bravery and compassion. As we reflect on this snapshot from yesteryears, it serves as a reminder that education knows no boundaries or limitations. These young minds may be far from open waters but through imaginative teaching methods like this one, dreams can take flight even in seemingly unlikely places like land-locked Huddersfield.
