The Nuns Olympics. The 100 metre dash by two nuns in the form of left Kevin Moran
The Nuns Olympics. The 100 metre dash by two nuns in the form of left Kevin Moran and right David Cannon.
They didn t have quite the organisation, perhaps, of the Munich Olympics. But the ecclesiastical games yesterday did have a spirit of their own. There were nuns, monks, rabbis, and vicars gathered in Chiswick to display their prowess for Spike Milligan, whose new BBC TV comedy series " A Milligan for all seasons" starts next week. There were hurdle races for the nuns (at least two of whom were fellers), pole vaults for priests... and an amazing- confessional relay, with each runner stopping to confess every 100 yards. Producer Roger Race, slightly bemused, said: " Spike told us to order a couple of dozen actors in clerical garb and this is the result." Spike himself turned out for the hurdles, dressed as a Roma n Catholic priest. Hoping to achieve immortality, presumably, as the Father of the Games. 4th September 1972

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of "The Nuns Olympics" held in Chiswick on September 4th, 1972. In this particular event, two nuns are seen participating in the exhilarating 100-meter dash, emulating the iconic sprinters Kevin Moran and David Cannon. While lacking the grandeur of the Munich Olympics, these ecclesiastical games possessed a unique spirit that brought together nuns, monks, rabbis, and vicars to showcase their athletic prowess. As Spike Milligan prepared for his upcoming BBC TV comedy series "A Milligan for all seasons" he eagerly watched these religious figures compete with great enthusiasm. The nuns engaged in hurdle races (with at least two being men), while priests showcased their skills in pole vaulting. However, it was the confessional relay that left everyone amazed - each runner would pause every 100 yards to confess their sins. Producer Roger Race expressed slight bemusement at Spike's request for actors dressed as clergy members but was astonished by the extraordinary outcome. Notably, Spike himself joined in on the fun by donning a Roman Catholic priest costume and participating in hurdles. Preserved through Ron Burton's lens from Memory Lane Prints, this print immortalizes an unforgettable moment where faith met athleticism with joyous camaraderie and lighthearted competition during "The Nuns Olympics.
