Hulme Crescents - A Failed Vision of Public Housing
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures the haunting remnants of Hulme Crescents, a once ambitious housing development situated in Manchester's Hulme district. Taken on November 9th, 1973, it offers a glimpse into what was once considered Europe's largest public housing scheme. Encompassing an impressive 3,284 deck-access homes and designed to accommodate over 13,000 residents, this concrete jungle quickly gained notoriety for all the wrong reasons. Plagued by serious construction and design errors from its inception in 1972, Hulme Crescents soon became synonymous with failure. The photograph reveals a desolate scene; rows upon rows of dilapidated flats stretching out like corridors into the distance. It is a stark reminder of the social issues that plagued this ill-fated project. The problems were so severe that just nineteen years after its completion in 1972, demolition began on The Crescents in 1991. Once envisioned as a beacon of hope for affordable housing and community living, Hulme Crescents instead became one of the worst public housing schemes in British history. Its demise serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of proper planning and execution when it comes to such large-scale developments. Bob Rendle's poignant photograph encapsulates both the grandeur and ultimate downfall of Hulme Crescents—a testament to how even well-intentioned projects can go awry if
