EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant print captures the village sign of Arkesden, Essex, serving as a somber reminder of the tragic aftermath that unfolded on April 20th, 1991. The devastating cottage fire claimed the life of renowned singer and songwriter Steve Marriott. In this image taken in November 1989, Marriott exudes his charismatic presence as a member of The Small Faces and Humble Pie, leaving an indelible mark on the music industry. A true mod icon, he influenced countless artists from Paul Weller to The Sex Pistols. Marriott's untimely demise occurred when a fire engulfed his historic 16th-century home in Arkesden. It was believed to have been sparked by a cigarette. Despite his premature departure from this world, Marriott's contributions were not forgotten. In 1996, he posthumously received an Ivor Novello Award for his Outstanding Contribution to British Music and was rightfully recognized by Mojo magazine as one of the greatest singers of all time. The photograph itself showcases more than just a village sign; it encapsulates both tragedy and legacy against the backdrop of serene nature. With its emblematic shield symbolizing strength and protection amidst adversity, this picture serves as a powerful tribute to Steve Marriott's enduring impact on British music history. Captured by Arnold Slater in 1990s Essex countryside with lush trees framing the scene and grass underfoot, it immortalizes both sorrowful memories and timeless artistry within its frame.
