Sergenat W Page of Coulsdon, Surrey, and Leading Aircraftman G Skelsey of London fit a long-range fuel tank to a Hawker Typhoon Mark IB of No. 137 Squadron RAF at B78 Eindhoven, Holland. The tanks enabled the Typhoons to carry out strikes deeper into German territory, at the expense of a reduced weapons load of two, instead of four, rocket projectiles carried under each wing. EDITORS COMMENTS
Sergeant W. Page of Coulsdon, Surrey, and Leading Aircraftman G. Skelsey of London work diligently to attach a long-range fuel tank to a Hawker Typhoon Mark IB of No. 137 Squadron RAF at B78 Eindhoven, Holland in December 1944. This remarkable photo captures the dedication and ingenuity of these brave men as they prepare the Typhoons for deep strikes into German territory during World War II. The addition of these fuel tanks allowed the Typhoons to extend their range, enabling them to carry out crucial missions further into enemy lines. However, this came at a cost - each aircraft had to sacrifice two rocket projectiles from its usual arsenal of four under each wing. As part of the Royal Air Force's ground crew, Sergeant Page and Leading Aircraftman Skelsey played an essential role in ensuring that every aircraft was equipped for combat effectively. Their expertise and attention to detail were vital in maintaining the operational readiness of these powerful war machines. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder not only of the technological advancements made during this era but also highlights the unwavering commitment and teamwork displayed by those who served on the frontlines. It is through their efforts that we can appreciate both the sacrifices made by our armed forces and their significant contributions towards securing victory in one of history's most challenging conflicts.
