EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print from 1987, we witness a significant moment for the Gower-based private rescue service. As they embark on future mercy missions, their crew members will now rely on the cutting-edge Avon SR4M inshore rescue craft. The coxswain of the Broughton Bay inshore-rescue service, Mr Rob Shefford, gratefully accepts this custom-built vessel from Mr Alan Lloyd, chairman of Swansea City Council's leisure services committee. Established by local residents in 1976 following a tragic drowning incident involving a child, the Broughton Bay Inshore-Rescue Committee has been tirelessly funded by the city council to ensure safety along these treacherous waters. This new addition replaces their old and leaky boat with state-of-the-art technology that is described as being at the forefront of design. The significance of this handover cannot be overstated; it symbolizes progress and unwavering dedication to saving lives. With its sleek lines and powerful engine, this rescue craft represents hope for those who find themselves in distress at sea. As we gaze upon this historic moment frozen in time, let us acknowledge not only the bravery and commitment of these selfless individuals but also recognize the vital role played by charitable organizations like theirs. Through their efforts and support from generous donors within our community, countless lives have been saved over the years. Transporting us back to an era where emergency services relied on human ingenuity rather than advanced technology alone, this image serves as a reminder that even amidst adversity and tragedy, humanity prevails through acts of compassion and unity.
