Kielders "super moles"will today put the lid on their record breaking

Kielders " super moles" will today put the lid on their record breaking tunnelling feat. For the past six years workmen have been beavering away underground to forge a 17 mile channel which will carry water from Europes largest man made lake. Today they will see their hard work sealed underground as Kielder boss John Ritson shuts the final hatches on the 38m tunnel. The mammoth construction will carry water from the vast Kielder reservoir to an outlet in the River tees at Eggleston. Pictured, John Ritson closes one of the tunnel doors before the water flows. 10th March 1982
