One of William Deans elegant 4-2-2 locomotives of the Great Western Railway, 23 September 1898. No 3050 Royal Sovereign caught at speed leaving a Box Tunnel with the 7:15am express from Falmouth to London Paddington. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the sheer elegance and power of one of William Deans' remarkable 4-2-2 locomotives, belonging to the prestigious Great Western Railway. Taken on 23 September 1898, this particular engine is none other than No 3050 Royal Sovereign, caught in a breathtaking moment as it hurtles out of Box Tunnel with the resolute determination of the 7:15am express from Falmouth to London Paddington. Adorned with its magnificent polished brass and copper fittings, this Dean Single locomotive stands tall with its impressive 7ft 8in driving wheels. Symbolizing the epitome of GWR's express steam during the turn of the century, these majestic engines were a sight to behold. However, by the end of 1915, all these extraordinary machines had been retired from service. The National Railway Museum proudly presents this exquisite print that encapsulates both history and artistry. It serves as a testament to an era when steam-powered locomotives ruled supreme and exemplifies the dedication and craftsmanship put into creating such marvels on wheels. As you gaze upon this image frozen in time, let your imagination transport you back to an age where railways connected distant lands and brought people closer together. Appreciate not only the technical brilliance but also admire how effortlessly beauty merges with functionality in this exceptional piece of engineering prowess captured forever within this photograph.
