The Flying Scotsman, BR poster, 1962

In 1962, British Railways Eastern Region introduced a fleet of twenty-two Deltic diesel electric locomotives. This poster was produced to mark the centenary of the Flying Scotsman service and project the modernity of the new Deltics. The poster shows an illustration of The Flying Scotsman in 1862 (above), rendered in shades of brown to give it an antique look, and in 1962 as the epitome of sleek modern design and speed

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic "Flying Scotsman" in all its glory, capturing a remarkable moment in British railway history. Produced by British Railways Eastern Region in 1962, this poster commemorates the centenary of the legendary Flying Scotsman service while also highlighting the introduction of twenty-two state-of-the-art Deltic diesel electric locomotives. The poster cleverly juxtaposes two eras: one from 1862 and another from 1962. The top section portrays an exquisite illustration of The Flying Scotsman as it appeared a century earlier, exuding timeless elegance with its steam locomotive design. Rendered in warm shades of brown, this depiction adds an antique charm to the overall composition.
