TOURISTS CLIMB AYERS ROCK IN CENTRAL AUSTRALIA
A line of tourists use a chain to climb the worlds largest monolith, Ayers Rock, about 350 kms (220 miles) southwest of the central Australian town of Alice Springs in this photograph taken on April 20, 2004. Ayers Rock, known by local Aboriginals as Uluru, received around 1, 000 tourists annually 40 years ago. Since then, it has become one of Australias major tourist destinations, attracting 400, 000 visitors every year. Many tourists climb the 318 meter (1043 feet) rock, although the local Aboriginal owners request that visitors respect their sacred site and view it only from the ground. EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print captured by Tim Wimborne, a line of adventurous tourists can be seen ascending the majestic Ayers Rock in Central Australia. The world's largest monolith, also known as Uluru to the local Aboriginals, stands tall and proud about 350 kilometers southwest of Alice Springs. The image transports us back to April 20,2004 when Ayers Rock was still relatively untouched by mass tourism. It is fascinating to note that four decades prior, only around 1,000 visitors made their way to this awe-inspiring site annually. However, over time it has evolved into one of Australia's most sought-after destinations with an astounding influx of approximately 400,000 travelers each year. Despite its popularity among climbers like those depicted in the photograph who rely on chains for support during their ascent up the towering rock face measuring a staggering 318 meters (1043 feet), it is important to acknowledge the significance and sacredness attached to this landmark by its Aboriginal custodians. They kindly request that visitors respect their cultural heritage and admire Uluru solely from ground level. This powerful visual encapsulates both the allure and controversy surrounding Ayers Rock as a tourist attraction. It serves as a reminder of humanity's desire for exploration while highlighting our responsibility towards preserving indigenous traditions and honoring sacred spaces such as these.
