A puffin drops the sand eels it was carrying as it is chased by a gull on the Farne
A puffin drops the sand eels it was carrying as it is chased by a gull on the Farne Islands off the Northumberland coast, northern England July 8, 2013. The Farne Islands, which lie off the coast of northeast England, are home to a huge array of wildlife. The islands are owned and protected by the British conservation charity, the National Trust, which says they host some 23 species of seabird, as well as a substantial colony of grey seals, who come to have their pups there in the autumn. Every five years the National Trust carries out a census of the islands population of puffins, and this years survey showed there were almost 40, 000 nesting pairs on the islands - an 8 percent rise from 2008. EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we witness a thrilling chase between two iconic seabirds on the Farne Islands off the Northumberland coast in northern England. A puffin, known for its distinctive appearance and comical demeanor, finds itself dropping the precious sand eels it was carrying as it is pursued by an opportunistic gull. The intensity of the moment is beautifully captured by photographer Nigel Roddis. The Farne Islands, owned and protected by the British conservation charity National Trust, are renowned for their diverse wildlife population. With 23 species of seabirds and a significant colony of grey seals that come to give birth in autumn, these islands serve as a vital sanctuary for nature's wonders. Every five years, the National Trust conducts a census to monitor the puffin population on these islands. The latest survey revealed an encouraging increase of almost 40,000 nesting pairs – an 8 percent rise from 2008. This positive trend highlights successful conservation efforts and offers hope for preserving these charming creatures' future.
