EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Beyer-Garrett U1 2395 locomotive, a star of the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) during the interwar period, at the foot of the steep Worsborough Incline. Taken by the renowned photographer Charles E. Brown during the 1920s while he was serving in the Royal Air Force, the image offers a rare glimpse into the world of railway transport during this era. The Beyer-Garrett U1 class locomotives, also known as the "Jubilee Class," were renowned for their power and efficiency. With a total weight of 130 tons and a boiler pressure of 250 psi, these engines could reach impressive speeds of up to 70 miles per hour. This particular locomotive, numbered 2395, was one of the 232 engines of its class built between 1911 and 1913. The photograph shows the locomotive in its element, with its powerful wheels and massive boiler dwarfing the crew standing at its foot. The men, dressed in their uniforms, appear focused and determined as they tend to the engine, ensuring it is ready for the next leg of its journey. The incline in the background, with its steep gradient, underscores the impressive feats of engineering that were commonplace in the railway industry during this time. The photograph also provides a glimpse into the past, offering a window into a bygone era when steam-powered locomotives ruled the rails. The image's timeless quality and the sense of history it evokes make it a valuable addition to any railways or transport-themed collection.
