EDITORS COMMENTS
In this black-and-white photograph, a Handley Page Halifax Met. 6 aircraft of the Royal Air Force (RAF) soars majestically over the iconic Rock of Gibraltar. The image, captured by renowned photographer Charles E. Brown, dates back to February 1950. The Handley Page Halifax Met. 6, with the registration number XB-B, was a vital component of the RAF's postwar meteorology and weather reconnaissance fleet. Equipped with advanced meteorological instruments, this aircraft played a pivotal role in gathering essential weather data for military operations and forecasting. The Met. 6 was a modified version of the Handley Page Halifax bomber, which had seen extensive service during World War II. The RAF's meteorological squadrons, such as 224 Squadron to which XB-B belonged, were tasked with flying these modified Halifaxes to collect weather data over the Atlantic Ocean and European continent. The photograph showcases the Halifax Met. 6's distinctive features, including its large radome beneath the fuselage, which housed the meteorological equipment. The propellers churn up the air as the aircraft climbs, leaving a trail of vapor in the crisp, cool air of the Mediterranean. The backdrop of the iconic Rock of Gibraltar, with its distinctive stripes of color, adds a sense of history and grandeur to the image. The strategic location of Gibraltar, at the southern tip of Europe, made it an essential refueling and resupply stop for the RAF's long-range meteorological flights. This photograph is a testament to the RAF's commitment to meteorology and weather reconnaissance in the postwar era, and the vital role these efforts played in supporting military operations and ensuring the safety of aircrews. Charles E. Brown's masterful composition and timing have resulted in an enduring image that continues to captivate and inspire.
