Fine Art Prints from Royal Cornwall Museum
Eagle House, Castle Street, Launceston, Cornwall. 1958
General view of the frontage and part of the street, showing the eagles on the gateposts. A grand Georgian mansion, the house was built in 1764 for Coryndon Carpenter, the constable of Launceston Castle, using ten thousand pounds he had won in a government lottery. After his death it was briefly a very comfortable prison for naval officers captured in the Napoleonic Wars. The Cornish poet Charles Causley mentions the eagles in one of his poems. The house has been a hotel since the 1960s. Photographer: Charles Woolf

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1958, showcasing the magnificent Eagle House in Castle Street, Launceston, Cornwall. The image captures a general view of the frontage of this grand Georgian mansion, along with a glimpse of the bustling street. What makes this picture truly unique are the majestic eagles perched atop the gateposts, adding an air of regality to this historic landmark. Constructed in 1764 by Coryndon Carpenter, who had won ten thousand pounds in a government lottery, Eagle House was initially intended as a residence for Carpenter himself - then serving as constable of Launceston Castle. However, after his passing, fate took an intriguing turn for this architectural gem. It briefly served as a comfortable prison for naval officers captured during the Napoleonic Wars. The significance of Eagle House extends beyond its historical role; it has also found its way into literature through Cornish poet Charles Causley's work. In one of his poems, Causley mentions these very eagles that stand guard over centuries' worth of stories within these walls. Since the 1960s, Eagle House has been transformed into a hotel while preserving its eighteenth-century charm and architecture. This photograph is part of Charles Woolf's collection and provides us with an enchanting glimpse into Cornwall's rich heritage and architectural beauty.
