Fine Art Prints from Royal Cornwall Museum
Harbour, Polperro, Cornwall. 1860-1870s
A schooner and other vessels in the harbour with Chapel Rock, also known as Peak Rock, behind. The net loft can be seen on the right hand side of the photograph. Philip M. Correll (1992) suggests that the schooner may have brought coal from Runcorn in Cheshire or salt of the rougher sort from Cadiz. Photographic print from the manuscript The History of Polperro by Thomas Q. Couch (1878), which expanded on Jonathan Couchs work of the same name, published in 1871. Photographer: Lewis Harding

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the charming harbour of Polperro, Cornwall, during the late 19th century. The bustling scene showcases a variety of vessels gracefully floating on the calm waters, with a prominent schooner stealing the spotlight. Behind them stands Chapel Rock, also known as Peak Rock, adding an enchanting touch to this picturesque coastal landscape. As we delve into historical research by Philip M. Correll in 1992, intriguing possibilities emerge regarding the purpose of this schooner's voyage. It is suggested that it may have transported coal from Runcorn in Cheshire or rougher salt from Cadiz. Such insights remind us of the vital role harbours played in facilitating trade and connecting distant regions during this era. The net loft on the right-hand side of the photograph serves as a reminder of Polperro's fishing heritage and its reliance on marine resources for sustenance and livelihoods. This image offers a glimpse into daily life at that time when fishermen would venture out to sea aboard these very boats depicted before us. Preserved within Lewis Harding's photographic lens is not only a moment frozen in time but also an invaluable piece of Cornish history. This print originates from Thomas Q. Couch's manuscript "The History of Polperro" published in 1878 as an expansion upon Jonathan Couch's earlier work. Today, this remarkable image continues to captivate viewers with its timeless beauty and provides insight into Cornwall's rich maritime past - forever etching itself
