Artwork of a black hole at the centre of a galaxy

Black hole. Artists impression of a large black hole (at lower centre) located at the centre of an active galaxy. Around the hole are numerous stars, a glowing accretion disk and a vertical jet of gas. An accretion disk forms as the rapidly- rotating black hole imparts angular momentum by gravitational effects to matter falling towards it. The matter forms a large, spiral disc which is compressed and heated so that it begins to glow, emitting photons. The accretion disk becomes so hot that radiation pressure from the photons force out 2 jets of gas at the black holes poles almost at the speed of light. Active galaxies emit large amounts of energy from a source at their centre

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork showcases the enigmatic beauty of a black hole situated at the heart of an active galaxy. At the center, we are drawn to the immense gravitational force exerted by this celestial phenomenon. Surrounding it, a mesmerizing array of stars illuminates the cosmic canvas, while a luminous accretion disk spirals outward from its core. The formation of this accretion disk is a result of matter being pulled towards the rapidly rotating black hole. As it compresses and heats up, photons begin to radiate from its surface, creating an ethereal glow that captivates our imagination. The sheer intensity of this heat causes radiation pressure to expel two jets of gas at astonishing speeds near that of light itself. Active galaxies like these emit vast amounts of energy originating from their central source. This extraordinary display serves as a testament to nature's ability to create awe-inspiring wonders in even the most peculiar corners of our universe. Through this remarkable artwork, Science Photo Library invites us on a journey into cosmological realms where stellar phenomena and star death intertwine with artistic interpretation. It reminds us that beyond our earthly boundaries lies an infinite expanse waiting to be explored and understood through both scientific inquiry and creative expression.
