Artwork showing the Ariane series of launchers
Ariane launchers. Artwork showing the evolution of the Ariane series of European launchers. At far left is an Ariane 1 (first flight 24 December 1979). Next to this is the upgraded Ariane 2 (first flight 31 May 1986) and in the centre is the Ariane 3 with its two solid rocket boosters (first flight 4 August 1984). Just right of centre is the current model, Ariane 4 (first flight 15 June 1988), seen in the 44L variant with four liquid-fuelled boosters. At far right is Ariane 5 (first flight due mid-1996), a radically different design with two very large solid boosters. Ariane provides about 50% of the worlds commercial satellite launches each year

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork showcases the remarkable evolution of the Ariane series of European launchers, a testament to mankind's relentless pursuit of space exploration. Starting from the left, we witness the birth of this extraordinary family with Ariane 1, which took its maiden flight on December 24th, 1979. Next in line is Ariane 2, an upgraded version that soared into the skies for the first time on May 31st, 1986. However, it is Ariane 3 that truly catches our attention at the center of this masterpiece. With its two solid rocket boosters and inaugural flight on August 4th, 1984, it symbolizes a pivotal moment in Europe's space journey. Moving towards modernity but still holding onto its roots is Ariane 4 - seen here in its impressive variant known as "44L" - boasting four liquid-fueled boosters and making history with its first flight on June 15th, 1988. Finally, standing tall at far right is none other than Ariane 5. This radical design revolutionized space travel with two colossal solid boosters and was poised to embark upon its inaugural flight around mid-1996. It is awe-inspiring to acknowledge that each year approximately half of all commercial satellite launches worldwide are made possible by these magnificent European creations. As we gaze upon this artwork courtesy of Science Photo Library and immerse ourselves in their beauty and significance within humanity's quest for knowledge beyond Earth's boundaries
