Coloured engraving of Isaac Newton

Coloured engraving of Sir Isaac Newton (1642- 1727), the English physicist and mathematician. Newton was aged about 52 when this portrait (by Sir Godfrey Kneller) was engraved. Newton lived the greater part of his adult life at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he was Lucasian Professor of Mathematics. While there, following a visit by Halley in 1684, Newton wrote his great scientific work, Principia Mathematica, in which he gave his three laws of motion. From these laws he was able to deduce the law of universal gravitation. Newton also invented the binomial theorem; calculus (both differential and integral); and theories on mechanics and optics

EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured engraving showcases the brilliant mind and distinguished appearance of Sir Isaac Newton, one of history's greatest physicists and mathematicians. At the age of approximately 52, Newton sat for this portrait by renowned artist Sir Godfrey Kneller, capturing his intellectual prowess and commanding presence. Newton's significant contributions to science are immeasurable. As the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Trinity College, Cambridge, he dedicated a substantial portion of his adult life to advancing knowledge in various fields. His groundbreaking work on motion led him to formulate three fundamental laws that revolutionized our understanding of physics. However, it was through his magnum opus "Principia Mathematica" that Newton truly left an indelible mark on scientific history. Inspired by a visit from Halley in 1684, this monumental treatise unveiled not only his laws of motion but also introduced the law of universal gravitation – a concept that forever changed our comprehension of celestial mechanics. Beyond these remarkable achievements, Newton's genius extended far beyond theoretical physics. He delved into mathematics with inventions like the binomial theorem and calculus (both differential and integral), which continue to shape modern mathematical principles today. Additionally, he made significant strides in optics and mechanics during his illustrious career. This mesmerizing print serves as a testament to Sir Isaac Newton's profound impact on scientific thought throughout centuries. It encapsulates both his intellectual brilliance and enduring legacy as one of humanity's most revered minds in history.
