Coloured SEM of compact disc surface

Compact disc surface. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the surface of an audio compact disc (CD). The CD is made of aluminium with a transparent plastic coating. The metal disc underneath is etched by a laser beam producing the microscopic pits (coloured blue) which carry a digital code representing the sounds. The musical signal is capable of being read by a laser which is reflected at the etched surface. The thick layer of transparent plastic covering the reflective surface prevents dust and scratches from affecting the sound quality. A standard audio CD can store about 80 minutes of music. Magnification: x3, 100 at 6x7cm size. x7, 400 at 8x6ins, x3940 at 10x7cm master size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the surface of an audio compact disc (CD). The intricate details captured in this image reveal the fascinating technology behind this common yet remarkable device. The CD, composed of aluminium with a transparent plastic coating, is depicted here with its metal disc etched by a laser beam. These microscopic pits, beautifully highlighted in blue hues, carry a digital code that represents the sounds stored on the disc. When played, a laser reads the musical signal reflected from these etched surfaces. To ensure optimal sound quality and longevity, a thick layer of transparent plastic covers the reflective surface. This protective coating acts as a shield against dust particles and scratches that could potentially affect playback performance. It is astonishing to consider that such a small medium has the capacity to store approximately 80 minutes of music. With magnifications ranging from x3,100 at 6x7cm size to x3,940 at 10x7cm master size, this SEM image allows us to appreciate the intricacies involved in data storage and audio transmission. Through this visually stunning photograph from Science Photo Library's collection on communication and technology, we are reminded of how innovation continues to shape our world while simultaneously preserving our beloved forms of entertainment like audio CDs.
