Copy of the Imperial Standard Pound C016 / 2048

Copy of the Imperial Standard Pound. Parliamentary Copy number 5 (P.C.5) of the Imperial Standard Pound, dated 1879. The imperial system of weights and measures was established in 1824 and refined by later acts of parliament, especially the Weights and Measures Act of 1878. The primary imperial pound was constructed in 1844, and is a platinum cylinder with a groove to allow it to be lifted. The relationship of this standard and its copies to the international pound and the kilogram was examined in the early 1960s by the UKs National Physical Laboratory (NPL). EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a significant piece of history - a copy of the Imperial Standard Pound. Dated 1879, this particular copy is known as Parliamentary Copy number 5 (P. C. 5). The Imperial Standard Pound was an essential component of the imperial system of weights and measures, which was established in 1824 and refined over time by acts of parliament. Constructed in 1844, the primary imperial pound is depicted here as a platinum cylinder with a groove that allows it to be lifted. This technological marvel played a crucial role in defining mass within the British Empire during the 19th century. Intriguingly, this standard pound and its copies were subject to examination by the UK's National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in the early 1960s regarding their relationship to international measurements such as pounds and kilograms. Photographed at NPL in November 1969, this image offers us a glimpse into both scientific research practices and historical artifacts. It serves as a testament to Britain's dedication to precision measurement throughout its rich past. Today, this remarkable piece can be found on display at museums across Europe, reminding us of our ancestors' commitment to accuracy and providing valuable insights into our understanding of metrology -the science of measurement.
