Dmitry Ivanovich Mendeleyev

Dmitry Ivanovich Mendeleyev, Russian chemist, born Tobol sk, Siberia on February 7, 1834, died St Petersburg (now Leningrad), February 2, 1907. In 1869, whilst professor of chemistry at the University of St Petersburg, Mendeleyev proposed a classification of the chemical elements which is still in use today - the Periodic Table. He grouped the 62 elements he knew of into a number of families, leaving gaps corresponding to elements that should exist but which had not yet been discovered. The subsequent discovery of such new elements as gallium and germanium was a vindication of Mendeleyevs system

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Dmitry Ivanovich Mendeleyev, a renowned Russian chemist whose groundbreaking contributions revolutionized the field of chemistry. Born in Tobolsk, Siberia on February 7,1834, Mendeleyev's brilliance and passion for science propelled him to great heights. In 1869, during his tenure as a professor of chemistry at the University of St Petersburg, Mendeleyev introduced an extraordinary concept that forever changed our understanding of chemical elements - the Periodic Table. This ingenious classification system organized the known 62 elements into families while leaving vacant spaces for yet-to-be-discovered elements. His visionary approach not only provided order and structure but also predicted the existence of future elements. Mendeleyev's genius was validated when gallium and germanium were subsequently discovered, precisely filling those empty slots he had anticipated. This remarkable achievement solidified his status as one of history's most influential scientists. Captured in this stunning portrait by Science Photo Library, Dmitry Ivanovich Mendeleyev exudes wisdom and determination. His legacy lives on through his enduring contribution to scientific knowledge – the Periodic Table – which continues to serve as an indispensable tool for chemists worldwide.
