Georges Cuvier, French zoologist

Georges Cuvier (1769-1832), French zoologist and anatomist. Georges Leopold Chretien Frederick Dagobert Cuvier was educated in Stuttgart, Germany. He extended the work of Linnaeus in classification, most notably of molluscs and fishes. In 1811 he became the founder of vertebrate palaeontology by classifying fossil mammals and reptiles. He also developed comparative anatomy, the deduction of the shape and purpose of an entire extinct animal from a few bones. He rejected evolutionary theory, believing in periodic catastrophes such as the Biblical flood as an end to existing life and the creation of new and better forms. He was made a peer in 1831. Engraving by Madame Lizinka de Mirbel

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Georges Cuvier, a prominent French zoologist and anatomist who made significant contributions to the field of natural history. Born in 1769, Cuvier received his education in Stuttgart, Germany, where he developed a deep passion for studying and classifying various species. Building upon the work of Linnaeus, he focused on molluscs and fishes but later expanded his research to include fossil mammals and reptiles. Cuvier's groundbreaking classification system paved the way for vertebrate palaeontology, earning him the title of its founder. His expertise extended beyond taxonomy as he also pioneered comparative anatomy – deciphering an entire extinct animal's shape and purpose from just a few bones. While rejecting evolutionary theory prevalent during his time, Cuvier believed in periodic catastrophes like the Biblical flood that wiped out existing life forms while giving rise to new and improved ones. In recognition of his remarkable achievements, Cuvier was honored with peerage in 1831. The accompanying engraving by Madame Lizinka de Mirbel beautifully captures this influential figure against a monochrome backdrop. With this artwork serving as a testament to his legacy, it is evident that Georges Cuvier left an indelible mark on both scientific understanding and our appreciation for nature's wonders.
