Jean D Alembert, French mathematician

Jean D Alembert (1717-1783), French mathematician. D Alembert graduated from Mazarin College, Paris, France, in 1735 and was admitted to the Academy of Sciences in 1741. He investigated gravitational theory, particularly the precession of the equinoxes. D Alembert was a pioneer of the study of differential equations and their application in physics. This led him to study the equilibrium and motion of fluids. He sponsored both Lagrange and Laplace who completed this work. He worked on the great encyclopedia of Diderot, writing the introduction and many of its mathematics and physics articles

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Jean D'Alembert, a prominent French mathematician of the 18th century. With his distinguished profile and intellectual gaze, D'Alembert's image captures the essence of a brilliant mind dedicated to advancing scientific knowledge. Born in 1717, D'Alembert excelled academically and graduated from Mazarin College in Paris. His exceptional abilities led him to be admitted to the prestigious Academy of Sciences in 1741. Throughout his career, he delved into various fields of study, including gravitational theory and its application to understanding the precession of equinoxes. D'Alembert's most significant contributions lie in his pioneering work on differential equations and their applications in physics. This groundbreaking research paved the way for advancements in fluid mechanics as he explored equilibrium and motion within fluids. Not only was D'Alembert an accomplished mathematician but also an influential figure who played a crucial role in shaping scientific literature. He actively participated in writing articles for Denis Diderot's monumental encyclopedia, contributing extensively to mathematics and physics sections while penning its introduction. His impact extended beyond his own achievements as well; D'Alembert sponsored other notable scientists such as Lagrange and Laplace who continued his legacy by completing important works related to fluid mechanics. This remarkable engraving serves as a testament to Jean D'Alembert's enduring influence on mathematics, physics, and scientific scholarship during the Enlightenment era.
