Opal gemstones

Opal gemstones. This mineral is a form of hydrous silicon oxide (silica, SiO2). It is named after the Indian word for precious stone. After it has been cut and polished, it has an iridescent sheen. This is as a result of its composition of microspheroids of silicon oxide that refract light. This is enhanced by reflections from tiny conchoidal fractures (crazing) that occur on exposure to the air. Opal never occurs in a crystalline form, but as small veins, globules and crusts. Several types occur: hazy blue, milky white, colourless and the highly prized red (fire opal) and black

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of opal gemstones. Opals, a form of hydrous silicon oxide, derive their name from the Indian word for precious stone. Once cut and polished, they reveal an enchanting iridescent sheen that captures the imagination. This ethereal glow is a result of their composition, which consists of microspheroids of silicon oxide that refract light in a unique manner. What makes opals even more fascinating are the reflections they emit from tiny conchoidal fractures known as crazing when exposed to air. These fractures enhance the play of colors and add depth to their already stunning appearance. Unlike other gemstones, opal never occurs in crystalline form but rather as small veins, globules, or crusts. In this image captured by Science Photo Library, we are presented with an assortment of opal gemstones in various cuts and natural forms. From hazy blue to milky white and colorless variations to highly prized red (fire opal) and black ones – each specimen exudes its own distinct allure. Opals have long been treasured for their uniqueness and rarity in Earth's vast collection of minerals. As we gaze upon this photograph, we can't help but marvel at nature's ability to create such exquisite gems that continue to captivate us with their timeless charm.
