Xray X-MP / 48 supercomputer at CERN

The distinctive shape & bright colouring of the CRAY X-MP/48 supercomputer dominate the Computer Centre at CERN, the European centre for particle physics research near Geneva. The CRAY X-MP/48 consists of four central processors. It has a capacity of 8 million bits of shared memory & 128 million words (1 giga-octet) of solid state memory. The X-MP/48 was installed in 1988 to increase CERNs computing power in preparation for its giant new particle accelerator, the LEP (Large Electron-Positron) collider. Photo taken April 1989

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic CRAY X-MP/48 supercomputer, which proudly stands as the centerpiece of CERN's Computer Centre. Its distinct shape and vibrant coloring command attention, symbolizing the cutting-edge technology housed within. The CRAY X-MP/48 is an engineering marvel consisting of four central processors that work in unison to deliver unparalleled computing power. With a staggering capacity of 8 million bits of shared memory and an astounding 128 million words (1 giga-octet) of solid-state memory, this supercomputer represents a true technological milestone. Installed at CERN in 1988, the X-MP/48 played a crucial role in bolstering the research facility's computational capabilities ahead of its ambitious project: the construction of the LEP collider (Large Electron-Positron). This colossal particle accelerator required immense computing power to analyze vast amounts of data generated by high-energy experiments. Captured in April 1989, this photograph encapsulates both the significance and grandeur associated with scientific progress. It serves as a testament to humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge and innovation. Science Photo Library has immortalized this remarkable moment through their lens, allowing us to appreciate not only the physical presence but also the profound impact that advanced computer hardware like Cray X-MP/48 had on pushing boundaries within particle physics research at CERN.
